How The Universe Works: The Principle of Rhythm

In our series of studies on the Hermetic Principles described in the book The Kybalion (Study of the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Greece), we arrive at the fifth Principle, the Principle of Rhythm.

This Principle teaches us that:

"Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates."

We have already learned in the Principle of Polarity that everything comes in pairs, everything has two poles. Rhythm adds that everything manifests itself in a proportional movement between these two poles, a swing backward and forward.

If we have a high tide, we have a low tide; if we have a flow, we have an inflow; if we have birth, we have death; if something "goes", that something also "comes".

But the interesting thing here is to understand that this Principle does not say that this "back and forth" is between the ends of the polarities of the energy that is being manifested. The key here is to understand that “rhythm compensates.” If something goes "up to 10", the offset will be "minus 10". Now if something goes "up to 100", the compensation will be "minus 100".

The closer we manifest the extreme of an energy, the closer the opposite extreme will also be manifested. If I project this externally, the external will be responsible for projecting it back. Remember Newton's Laws?

"His third law states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. If object A exerts a force on object B, object B also exerts an equal and opposite force on object A. In other words, forces result from interactions." Source Nasa

This Law manifests itself on all Planes (Physical, Mental and Spiritual). But to deal with this, you can use the Neutralization technique.

If you felt a peak of happiness, a proportional sadness will follow. But this manifestation of sadness does not need to last as long as happiness did. Think about energy charge. This peak of sadness may only last a few seconds. But for it to last just a few seconds, you need to become the observer of this emotion. If you understand that it is a natural emotion, there is no problem in feeling it and you don't let yourself be carried away by it (no dramatizing it), the "peak" of sadness will occur and the compensation has been made. Realize that it's not that you remained happy all the time, you manifested both sides.

Now if you cling to sadness and increase it, you will need a much greater peak of happiness to compensate it. And here we end up entering the threshold of happiness/euphoria. I try to be very euphoric to compensate the sadness, but with that comes another sadness peak. I let myself be carried away by the melancholy, I increase the sadness level and with that comes a need for an even greater euphoria, with that comes the addictions, and I repeat a whole cycle.

This same principle can be applied to everything, both on a personal and collective level. I leave other possible examples for your reflection. And remember:

Plenitude will come by walking the middle path.
