How The Universe Works: The Principle of Polarity
In this fourth article in our series on the 7 Hermetic Principles (1-Mentalism, 2-Correspondence and 3-Vibration) described in the book The Kybalion, we arrive at the Principle of Polarity that teaches us:
"Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled"
In order to understand this principle, let's start by looking at Love and Hate. Answer me:
- Do you love some people?
- Do you like some people?
- Do you like some people just a little bit?
- Are there people you neither like nor dislike?
- Are there people you don't like very much?
- Are there people you hate (who has never seen a movie, series or reality show and felt hatred for someone)?
Do you realize that Love and Hate are polarities of the same energy that only vary in intensity and direction ("up" you go towards love, "down" you go towards hate)? Or rather, opposites identical in nature but different in degree?
Let's now look at the atoms that make up all matter: atoms have positive charges and negative charges. The positive charge has its function, the negative charge has its function, but there is no matter if the two are not together.

Is it possible to say then that the negative is bad and the positive is good? Or do they simply be and do you need both for matter to exist?
Another example, fear and courage: courage only exists because there is fear, they are identical energies in nature, in one polarity of the scale we have fear and in the opposite polarity we have courage. If you are feeling fear, you can "mentally raise" the vibration of that energy on this scale and transmute that fear into courage.
This is what alchemists learn to do: transmute energy from one polarity to another. Realize that you cannot transmute fear into love or cold into courage, but hate can be transmuted into love, cold into hot, fear into courage.
Another example, east and west: where does one end and the other begin? Let's look at the image below:
If one person is leaving the USA in a west direction and another person is leaving Russia in an east direction, they will meet ("the extremes touch"). Where does one begin and the other end?

When we internalize this principle, we can apply it to alter the state of our consciousness: if I am on one degree of the scale, I can increase or decrease this energy just by polarizing it in the direction of what we want (if I am nervous, in the opposite direction I stay calm, if I don't move, going to the opposite direction I move, etc).
But for this to be effective, I need to accept that everything has its function, good and evil are the same thing at different degrees on a scale.
Remember: awareness is born from contrast.
