How The Universe Works: The Principle of Gender

 

In our series of studies on the Hermetic Principles described in the book The Kybalion (Study of the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Greece), we arrive at the final Principle, the Principle of Gender.

This principle tells us that:

"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes."- The Kybalion

Before any controversy begins, let me start by reminding that the word Gender is derived from the Latin root which means to generate, procreate, produce. In other words, this principle is not talking about physical sex or the biological body. This principle gives us information about the archetypal forces that everyone, without exception, possesses within themselves, him or her.

To facilitate understanding, these two forces are often also referred to as Negative (feminine) and Positive (masculine) energy, although the term Negative is often confused with something bad. But let's think, for example, about the atom.

The atom is made up of the positive part (proton) and the negative part (electrons). Everything here in physical matter is made up of atoms, there is nothing on the physical plane that is not made up of this. The movement of electrons around the proton is what generates the energy and creates the physical manifestation (gender = generate, produce).

Remember the Principle of Correspondence? We have the Physical Plane, Mental Plane and Spiritual Plane.

Manifestation Plans

Expanding this concept to the mental plane ("Gender manifests ion all planes"), we have this principle manifesting itself in the Mental Gender. When you "have an idea" and right after having it, you start to plan how to bring that idea to the Physical Plane. When that happens, we have these two principles in action. The idea was "inserted" into the mental plane (Masculine principle). After that, you start to generate this idea (Feminine principle) and plan how to bring it to the physical plane.

When manifesting this idea on the physical plane, these two principles again come into play. You create this on the physical plane and ensure that it is maintained. Again the two principles in action.

Realize that there is no creation or manifestation without the two principles working together. What may happen is that one of these two energies is acting in the unconscious part of your mind, that side that you don't realize exists in you, but that doesn't mean it isn't in action.

If Masculine/Feminine makes your head hurt, think of it as the Sun and Moon principles. The first deals more with the external world, the second deals more with the internal (at night you become more introspective and analyze how your day was). 

When you take care of your feelings and emotions, you are manifesting the lunar energy (feminine principle). When you take action, you are manifesting the solar energy (masculine principle). 

Again, there is no way to separate the two, there is no way to take action without first planning the action. Even if the planning is minimal, just at the level of "I'm going to take this hammer and hit the nail in that direction". Even though there is minimal planning, it still exists.

For a more balanced life, you will manifest these principles in a more equalized way. If I greatly enhance just one of these principles, I will tune in with another person who will tune in to the other principle to the same extent (remember the Principle of Polarity?).
