How The Universe Works: The Principle of Cause and Effect

In our series of studies on the Hermetic Principles described in the book The Kybalion (Study of the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Greece), we arrive at the sixth Principle, the Principle of Cause and Effect.

This Principle teaches us that:

"Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for a Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law."- The Kybalion

Nothing happens by chance. You've heard this popular phrase. Just as popular wisdom has its knowledge, this sixth Hermetic Principle deepens the notion of Cause and Effect for various planes of causation.

Remember Newton's Laws (again)?

"His third law states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. If object A exerts a force on object B, object B also exerts an equal and opposite force on object A. In other words, forces result from interactions." Source Nasa

In other words, every action has a reaction.

"Every Effect has its Cause": according to this principle, nothing escapes a greater Law that governs the entire Universe. If there was something that could happen by "Chance", it would mean that Chance would be something independent of the ordered movement of the Universe, therefore greater than itself.

As the entire Universe is ordered (think about the movements of the planets around their own axis, around the Sun, the entire planet running an ecosystem, gravity, etc...) there would not be this force that would be outside this ordering, therefore, if it is within the order, there is a Cause for this Effect.

Just as we saw in the Principle of Correspondence, the study of Kybalion understands that we live on 3 planes of existence:

3 Manifestation Plans

If I don't understand what is causing what I am experiencing, it may be because I am unaware of a law that is behind it or that this Cause comes from other planes.

As we saw in the Principle of Vibration, the other planes are vibrating at a different frequency than the Physical Plane, at a more higher vibration. Understanding the information (Cause) that comes from these plans takes more work, but that does not mean that there is not a Cause for this Effect in my life.

Focusing more on the Physical Plane, a person has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, sixteen great-great-grandparents and, continuing the count, in 40 Generations there are many thousands of grandparents. In other words, many thousands of causes have occurred up to the time and place in which you are.

This doesn't mean we need to be stuck in ancestral patterns. We can accept what happens because they are the Effect of unknown Causes, and make the movement within your power to change your part, so that you are the Cause of a better Effect for those after you.
